Congress party leader Rashid Alvi on Friday termed Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik's statement on Ram temple as a 'mockery of Constitution' and said that the latter does not deserve to be a governor.

"Doesn't Ram Naik know that this issue is pending in the Supreme Court? A governor making such a statement is mockery of the Constitution. After having pledged to uphold the Constitution if he makes such statement then he doesn't deserve to be a Governor," Alvi told ANI in New Delhi.

"If he is so keen to do politics then he should resign from the post of a governor and do politics," he added. Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik had earlier on Thursday sparked controversy after he said that a Ram temple should be built in Ayodhya saying that "it is the wish of Indian citizens". "People of the nation want Ram Mandir to be made, that wish should be fulfilled as soon as possible," Naik had said.
