RSS reaches out to young professionals in Noida

[by] Damini Nath

It could have been any other concert with jokes flying, music ringing through the outdoor venue and people dancing around, but for the liberal dose of nationalism.

Hundreds of young professionals and their families were served up a night of entertainment and education by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) here on Wednesday night. At a college in Noida’s Sector-12, about 600 families associated with information technology, and medical, legal and other professions came together to hear from Baba Satyanarayan Mourya.

The saffron-clad entertainer’s act included jokes about fairness creams, patriotic songs and short moral lessons evoking good habits from by-gone eras. The audience, mostly 25 to 35 years of age, sat till midnight to listen to the Mr. Mourya speak and perform an aarti for Mother India.

Each family paid Rs.300 to attend the meet where Mr. Mourya spoke about India’s contribution to the world, among other things. He claimed that India had given the world geometry and aeroplanes, but young people today were too caught up in Western culture to appreciate their own history.

The local wing of the RSS in Noida had organised the event to reach out to the satellite city’s significantly large upwardly-mobile population, especially those among the IT sector. Ved Prakash, the Noida mahanagar pracharak of RSS, said the event was to show people what the RSS was really about, especially since ‘interest’ in the organisation had increased after the Lok Sabha polls that propelled an unprecedented victory for the BJP.

“Many people are joining us online, but they don’t really know about the RSS’ morals and principles. This event was to educate them, while keeping it entertaining,” said Mr. Prakash.

About one month ago, the RSS wing in Noida started reaching out to people online and in person to invite them for “Bharat Mata ki Aarti”. Mr. Prakash, who is 27 years old, said while visiting about 300 families, many women asked him “What are you doing for us?”

“Women are also educated and going out to work these days. It wasn’t enough to invite the husbands or brothers to the event, we had to involve the entire family,” said Mr. Prakash.

He added that new ideas would be needed to attract new people to the nearly 90-year-old organisation. Tanmay Shankar, in-charge of the youth wing of RSS in Noida, said the idea is to have fun events without boring lectures. “It’s about giving like-minded people a platform,” said Mr. Shankar, claiming that the event was the biggest of its kind in India.

A 37-year-old architect, who attended the event with his economist wife, said he had never been to an RSS shakha (branch meeting) before the Lok Sabha polls. “Because of our busy schedules, we cannot attend shakhas regularly. So this kind of an event was great because we do have nationalist feelings,” said the architect, who wished to remain anonymous.

While the RSS claims to be getting 50-100 online queries from Noida alone every day, some people are still reluctant to publicly accept their interests in the right-wing organisation. “After all, we are working people,” said the architect.
