Woman who filed complaint against Bajrang Dal hailed

Mangalore: A woman employee of a store who dared to go to the police after Bajrang Dal activists beat her up for travelling in a car with her manager, a man from a different community, Thursday, has got the thumbs up from women activists for her courage.

The police has filed a case against the vigilante Bajrang men based on the complaint of the woman. Recalling that women, similarly attacked in a pub and home stay, were reluctant to file a complaint, Ms Vidhya Dinkar of the Forum Against Atrocities on Women, hailed the store employee for taking on the self-styled moral brigade.

“We must appreciate her courage which is an example for other women to follow,” Ms Dinkar said, speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, regretting that despite public outrage at such moral policing, there seemed to be no end to it in the city.

“We want to create awareness among young girls and women that they don't need to feel ashamed after being attacked by these hooligans and should fight them legally. It is these vigilante groups and the policemen, who fail to take action against them, who should be ashamed,” she said, calling for more support from society as well for victims of these attacks.

"It's time society stopped eyeing victims of these so-called moral police with suspicion," she underlined.

The married woman is working as a receptionist in a shop and the man was working as a manager.

“The vigilante groups took offence to this as both were from different religions. They used to leave office together which made these groups uncomfortable,” sources said.

Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell had claimed his organisation was not involved.
